I care because it represents a great challenge for human beings and the environment because as it adds up, it increases the risk of natural disasters, disappearance of flora and fauna, sea level rive and decreases life probability.The effects of Climate change are of global reach, therefore we need to begin working towards alternatives and solutions to revert its effects, as well as impulsing education; giving a break to the environment.
Me importa el cambio climático ya que representa un gran desafío para el ser humano y el medio ambiente porque a medida que aumenta, incrementa el riesgo de desastres naturales, desaparición de la flora y fauna, aumento del nivel del mar y las probabilidades de vida cada vez son menos. Los efectos del cambio climático son de alcance global por lo cual es necesario que comencemos trabajar alternativas de solución para revertir sus efectos, así como impulsar la educación ambiental; dándole un respiro al ambiente.

Having begun my pick-ups, I learnt all I could about the plastic soup and knew then I had to do something to help animals and the environment. Somehow all discarded rubbish and plastic thrown on the ground, no matter how long it takes with one way or another, will make its way to the sea. For that reason, I wanted to pick-up up all the plastic I saw because it is dangerous for animals and not biodegradable. Plastic gives the illusion of food for them and thus can be deadly.
Once the plastic is made, it never goes away and breaks down into smaller pieces – micro and nano plastics – becoming even more polluting. Plastic is made from oil and when it goes to landfill for a long time the chemicals change and gases go into the air making it heat up. The warmer air makes the seas warm and ice melt. Therefore, I do all I can to educate, encourage, and inspire people to stop using single-use plastic and recycle all they can.
Cuando comencé a recoger plástico, aprendí muchas cosas sobre la contaminación por plástico y supe que tenía que hacer algo para ayudar a los animales y al medio ambiente.De alguna manera, todos los desperdicios de basura y plástico tirados al suelo, de alguna u otra manera llegaran al mar. Por esta razón, quiero recoger todo el plástico que veo porque es peligroso para los animales y no es biodegradable. El plástico les da la ilusión de comida y puede ser mortal.
Una vez que el plástico está hecho nunca desaparece y se descompone en pedazos más pequeños, micro y nano plásticos, volviéndose incluso más contaminantes. El plástico está hecho de petróleo y cuando va a un vertedero durante mucho tiempo, los químicos cambian y los gases entran al aire y se calientan. El aire más cálido hace que los mares se calienten y el hielo se derrita.Por lo tanto, hago todo lo que puedo para educar, alentar e inspirar a las personas a dejar de usar plástico de un solo uso y reciclar todo lo que puedan

Since I was young, witnessing all the impact that humans cause to our planet affected me a lot; discovering that Climate Change is the consequence of those acts, triggered an impulse and motivation to tell the world what was going on. Through my participation in television programs, and in the schools where I have been invited to give talks I encourage everyone to do something about it,
After earning the National Youth Award, I met Dr. Carlos Gay García, who together with Al Gore and a group of UNAM scientists won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. After his conference, he told young people who approached him to greet him, that “sadly Climate Change may not stop any longer, and it is better to focus on adapting its effects” and from now my main objective is to communicate that advice to the young people I visit in my conferences in Universities; to work on the issue and begin to create and design new models of life (houses, clothing, devices, etc.) for the imminent future, getting our species to adapt to survive.
Desde chico ver todo este impacto que el ser humano le causa a nuestro planeta me afectó mucho; y descubrir que el Cambio Climático es la consecuencia de esos actos, hizo que dentro de mí naciera el impulso y la motivación de contarle al mundo lo que estaba pasando. Por medio de mis participaciones en programas de televisión, y en las escuelas donde me han invitado a dar charlas invito al público a hacer algo al respecto.
Después del Premio Nacional de la Juventud, conocí al Dr. Carlos Gay García, que junto con Al Gore y un grupo de científicos de la UNAM ganaron el Premio Nobel de la Paz en 2007. Tras su conferencia, nos contó a los jóvenes que nos acercamos a saludarlo, que “tristemente el Cambio Climático tal vez ya no pueda detenerse, y es mejor enfocarnos en la adaptación de sus efectos” y desde ahora mi principal objetivo, es comunicarles ese consejo a los jóvenes que visito en mis conferencias en sus Universidades para que trabajen en el tema y empiecen a crear y diseñar nuevos modelos de vida (casas, ropa, dispositivos, etc.) para el futuro inminente, consiguiendo que nuestra especie pueda adaptarse para sobrevivir.

Because of human carelessness, the earth we love is in peril. Climate change has disrupted the earth’s balance, and its effects are widespread. Birds like the puffin find themselves in warmer waters, unable to feed the right sized fish to their chicks. Animals like the polar bear find their habitat melting and shrinking. Communities face longer and more forceful droughts, superstorms and flooding. Polluted oceans kill protective coral reefs and destroy biodiversity. The problems are there, so why isn’t action being taken?
When people hear the environment is out of whack, they tend to shrug it off, try to disprove it, or resist the changes required to improve it. Unfortunately species are going extinct at an alarming rate, vast amounts of vital land are milled over for short-term benefit, and political leaders are more concerned about beating the opposition than improving the country. However, there is a way out of this ditch. Our generation must speak out and inspire others. United, we can move mountains, hearts and minds.
Climate change is not a religion. You cannot just say you don’t believe in it. An imperfect solution is better than wasting time and resources investing in an old idea. This crisis will continue unless we, the next generation, choose to change.
Debido al descuido humano, la tierra que amamos está en peligro. El cambio climático ha perturbado el equilibrio de la Tierra y sus efectos son generalizados. Aves como el frailecillo se encuentran en aguas más cálidas, incapaces de alimentar a sus polluelos con el tamaño correcto de los peces. Animales como el oso polar encuentran que su hábitat se derrite y se achica. Las comunidades enfrentan sequías y tormentas más largas y más contundentes e inundaciones. Los océanos contaminados matan los arrecifes de coral protectores y destruyen la biodiversidad. Los problemas están ahí, entonces, ¿por qué no se toman medidas?
Cuando las personas escuchan que el medio ambiente está fuera de control, tienden a ignorarlo, a tratar de refutarlo o a resistir los cambios necesarios para mejorarlo. Desafortunadamente, las especies se están extinguiendo a un ritmo alarmante, grandes cantidades de tierras vitales se muelen para obtener beneficios a corto plazo, y los líderes políticos están más preocupados por vencer a la oposición que por mejorar el país. Sin embargo, hay una salida de esta zanja. Nuestra generación debe hablar e inspirar a otros. Unidos, podemos mover montañas, corazones y mentes.
El cambio climático no es una religión No puedes simplemente decir que no crees en eso. Una solución imperfecta es mejor que perder tiempo y recursos invirtiendo en una vieja idea. Esta crisis continuará a menos que nosotros, la próxima generación, elijamos cambiar.

I care about climate change because it affects the sea animals that live on the ice and animals in other areas around the earth and they are losing the places they live. I don’t like the pollution from factories and cars because it’s bad for people and our environment – I like to recycle and pick up trash at the beach with my dad to help keep the planet cleaner.
Me importa el cambio climático porque afecta a los animales marinos que viven en el hielo y los animales en otras áreas alrededor de la tierra están perdiendo los lugares donde viven. No me gusta la contaminación de las fábricas y los automóviles porque es mala para las personas y nuestro medioambiente. Me gusta reciclar y recoger basura en la playa con mi papá para ayudar a mantener el planeta más limpio.

I am in the surf every day. I am part of the ecosystem. So of course I care about the health of the ocean and the earth and what is happening to it. Kids care about the future because kids are the future.

Global warming is one of the great dangers we are facing, and it’s one we can still prevent. As a scientists, we are committed with the society to explain how human activities are affecting climate systems in such ways that may forever change life on Earth. But most important, as a citizens of this planet, we have a duty to alert the public about the danger and risks that we live every day, and to the perils we foresee if governments and societies do not take action right now to prevent further climate change and therefore, the extinction of our planet. There is clear evidence that we are changing our climate for the worse. We have to immediately take action to stop those catastrophic effects.
El calentamiento global es uno de los mayores riesgos que estamos enfrentando y que aun podemos prevenir. Como cientificos estamos comprometidos con la sociedad para explicar como la actividad humana esta afectando los sistemas climatologicos que pueden cambiar para siempre la vida en la Tierra. Pero mas importante aun, como ciudadanos y habitantes de este planeta, tenemos la responsabilidad de alertar a la sociedad sobre el peligro y los riesgos que vivimos dia a dia, y de los riesgos que se pueden incrementar si los gobiernos y los ciudadanos no tomamos acciones de inmediato que ayuden a prevenir el cambio climatico, y, por lo tanto, la extincion de nuestro planeta. Hay fuertes evidencias de que estamos alterando el clima de manera alarmante. Tenemos que tomar acciones de inmediato para ponerle alto a estos efectos catastroficos.

I care about climate change because I believe that humans, whales, wolves, birds, fish, corals, sponges, algae, fungi, bacteria – the whole interconnected web of life – is all too wonderful and beautiful for us to wantonly destroy. There’s not much that’s good about climate change, but I hope that it’ll be the shock that makes humans realise the power that they have. I hope it will stimulate us to work to heal our planet, for the good of us all.
Me importa el cambio climático porque creo que los seres humanos, las ballenas, los lobos, las aves, los peces, los corales, las esponjas, las algas, los hongos y las bacterias (toda la red de vida interconectada) son demasiado maravillosos y hermosos para que los destruyamos despreocupadamente. No hay mucho que sea bueno sobre el cambio climático, pero espero que sea el impacto lo que haga que los humanos se den cuenta del poder que tienen. Espero que nos estimule a trabajar para sanar nuestro planeta, por el bien de todos nosotros.

Climate change is a very important global issue that is actually happening right now. Despite the tendencies to mislead the discussion towards the uncertainty in the subject, there is overwhelming evidence that points to the human responsibility on global warming.
Climate change is a multidimensional problem that affects not only the physical environment, but also has social and economic implications. Because of the population growth and the location of human settlements, the vulnerability to natural disasters has increased. Under climate change this vulnerability can be increased, and even more considering extreme events. Therefore I think is very important to understand the physical basis of climate change and how it could impact any particular region, in order to develop strategies for managing risk, mitigation and adaptation.
El cambio climático es un problema presente muy importante. A pesar de la tendencia de desviar la discusión hacia la incertidumbre en este tema, existe evidencia contundente de la responsabilidad humana en el calentamiento global.
El cambio climático es un problema multidimensional que tiene implicaciones no solamente ambientales sino económicas también. La vulnerabilidad ha aumentado debido al crecimiento de la población y a la localización de los asentamientos humanos. Bajo el Cambio Climático esta vulnerabilidad se puede incrementar e incluso exacerbar cuando se consideran eventos extremos. Por lo tanto es muy importante entender las bases científicas del cambio climático y cómo se ven afectadas regiones en particular, a fin de desarrollar estrategias de adaptación y mitigación.

When I was in primary school, I started a little club with my classmates, which aimed at spreading awareness about environmental issues and encouraging more environmentally-friendly practices at school. While the club didn’t last for long (despite the cool member cards!), my preoccupation with the preservation of the planet has stayed with me ever since, and in fact it has really shaped the way I live.
Everywhere we look, scientific data is mounting and leading to the same conclusion: climate change is the greatest threat that life on our planet, as we know it, has ever faced. The evidence is in our hands, and so is the responsibility to take action before it’s too late.
Hace muchos años, estando aún en primaria, monté un pequeño club ecologista con mis compañeros de clase, para charlar sobre el medio ambiente y promover actitudes respetuosas con la naturaleza en el colegio. Aquel club no duró mucho tiempo… (¡a pesar de tener unos carnés de socio muy chulos!). Sin embargo, mi preocupación por el planeta me ha acompañado desde entonces, y ha marcado mi estilo de vida.
La evidencia científica no para de crecer, llevándonos siempre a la misma conclusión: el cambio climático es la mayor amenaza a la que se enfrenta la vida en nuestro planeta, tal como la conocemos. Los datos están en nuestras manos, y también lo está la responsabilidad de entrar en acción antes de que sea demasiado tarde.

How could anyone not care about it? There is overwhelming evidence that human activity has greatly impacted Earth’s ecosystems and geology. For example, since last year, Antarctica has recorded the highest concentration of CO2 in 4 million years. 4,000,000 years! Needless to say a great part of it comes from burning fossil fuels, which are naturally stored away from the atmosphere, either in solid or liquid form, or in gas phase trapped underground. By burning fossil fuels and releasing the CO2 into the atmosphere, we, Humans, have been able to shift the concentration of CO2 in the air.
Although it sounds (and it is!) bad, I believe that as a global community, we can slow down the climate change. I always like to think about the ozone depletion as an example that individual’s actions and policies can help to protect our planet.
Why not push our leaders to do more about climate change? Changing our economy to renewables may seem expensive, but what is the price for our planet?
¿Cómo podría alguien no preocuparse por eso? Existe una evidencia abrumadora de que la actividad humana ha tenido un gran impacto en los ecosistemas y la geología de la Tierra. Por ejemplo, desde el año pasado, la Antártida ha registrado la mayor concentración de CO2 en 4 millones de años. ¡4,000,000 años! No hace falta decir que una gran parte de esto proviene de la quema de combustibles fósiles los cuales se almacenan naturalmente fuera de la atmósfera, ya sea en forma sólida o líquida, o en fase gaseosa atrapada bajo tierra.
Al quemar combustibles fósiles y liberar el CO2 en la atmósfera, nosotros, los humanos, hemos sido capaces de cambiar la concentración de CO2 en el aire. Aunque suena (¡y lo es!) malo, creo que, como comunidad global, podemos frenar el cambio climático. Siempre me gusta pensar sobre el agotamiento de la capa de ozono como un ejemplo de que las acciones y políticas de los individuos pueden ayudar a proteger nuestro planeta.
¿Por qué no presionar a nuestros líderes para que hagan más sobre el cambio climático? Cambiar nuestra economía a energías renovables puede parecer costoso, pero ¿cuál es el precio de nuestro planeta?

The rate and magnitude with which we are increasing the temperature of the Earth, along with secondary effects such as ocean acidification, will have considerable ecological, economical and societal consequences. I believe it is our duty to leave the planet and its systems in a better state than which we found it for the sustainable use of future generations.
La velocidad y la magnitud con la que estamos aumentando la temperatura de la Tierra, junto con los efectos secundarios como la acidificación de los océanos, tendrán considerables consecuencias ecológicas, económicas y sociales. Creo que es nuestro deber dejar el planeta y sus sistemas en un mejor estado que en el que encontramos para el uso sustentable de las generaciones futuras.

Climate change is a sensitive issue due to the harsh transformation the world is undergoing; the improper use of natural resources and consequently damage to flora and fauna and species in danger of extinction. It is important to create awareness of the decisions we make regarding the environment and to reflect on what habits we can improve to reduce this problem.
El cambio climático es un tema delicado por la dura transformación que está sufriendo el mundo; el uso indebido de recursos naturales y como consecuencia daños a flora y fauna y especies en peligro de extinción. Es importante crear conciencia de las decisiones que tomamos en cuanto al medio ambiente y reflexionar qué habitos podermos mejorar para disminuir este problema.

We believe that the Earth provides us with powerful and inexhaustible natural resources which we are free to utilise for our benefit. We take clean air for granted and perceive the sun as the source of heat. We draw from nature what and when we want believing that the resources will last for generations to come, or perhaps even, forever. This way of thinking is, of course, inherently wrong, as the effects of overexploitation of nature, destruction, littering and elimination of species are irreversible.
We continue to talk about the dangers of war and terrorism, but forget that natural catastrophes triggered by climate change make our existence much more uncertain.
I deeply believe that spreading the knowledge of climate change is an urgent need and our most important duty. Of course, while I know that one person cannot changed the path of climate change, I believe that all changes should start with our closest surroundings, by changing ourselves.

Creemos que la Tierra nos proporciona recursos naturales poderosos e inagotables que somos libres de utilizar para nuestro beneficio. Tomamos el aire puro por sentado y percibimos el sol como fuente de calor. Sacamos de la naturaleza qué y cuándo queremos creer que los recursos durarán por generaciones futuras, o incluso, para siempre.
Esta forma de pensar es, por supuesto, intrínsecamente errónea, ya que los efectos de la sobreexplotación de la naturaleza, la destrucción, el desperdicio y la eliminación de especies son irreversibles.
Continuamos hablando sobre los peligros de la guerra y el terrorismo, pero olvidamos que las catástrofes naturales desencadenadas por el cambio climático hacen que nuestra existencia sea mucho más incierta.
Creo profundamente que difundir el conocimiento del cambio climático es una necesidad urgente y nuestro deber más importante. Por supuesto, aunque sé que una persona no puede cambiar el camino del cambio climático, creo que todos los cambios deben comenzar con nuestro entorno más cercano, cambiándonos a nosotros mismos.

Nature is unique, complex and composed of every element of our planet as small as it may be. And yes, we are part of this whole.
Climate change is not something exclusively externally visible. The change affects the essence of everything, the seed that is inside the fruit. It affects the temperature of the interior of the oceans, seas, rivers and any source of water. It affects the behavior of animals, changes their natural habitat and ecosystems that help them to survive. It changes us all (yes, we are animals) it changes our mood, happiness, generosity, hope, patience, intelligence, etc. However, it is a change that we cannot measure as the force of a hurricane. Therefore, if we do not look and do not take care of our interior, the sadness and all the things that corrode us slowly, like a small seed, will begin to grow and will become something bigger. The essence is the most important thing to face climate change.
La naturaleza es única, compleja y compuesta por cada elemento de nuestro planeta por más pequeño que este sea. Y sí, nosotros somos partes de este todo.
El cambio climático no es algo exclusivamente visible por fuera. El cambio afecta la esencia de todo, la semilla que está dentro de la fruta. Afecta la temperatura del interior de los océanos, mares, ríos y cualquier fuente de agua. Afecta el comportamiento de los animales, cambia su hábitat natural y los ecosistemas para que puedan sobrevivir. Nos cambia a todos (sí, somos animales) nos cambia el humor, la felicidad, la generosidad, la esperanza, la paciencia, la inteligencia, etc. Sin embargo, es un cambio que no podemos medir como se mide la fuerza de un huracán. Por lo tanto, si no miramos y no cuidamos de nuestro interior, la tristeza y todas las cosas que nos corroen lentamente, como una pequeña semilla, empezarán a crecer y se convertirán en algo cada vez más grande. La esencia es lo más importante para combatir el cambio climático.

Human beings can reach such a high level of stupidity and arrogance that they are capable of wounding their own world, breaking their own house and destroying the ecosystem that allows them to live. As designers we have the capacity and power to alert with visual forcefulness about climate change, denounce its causes and prevent its consequences.
El Ser humano puede llegar a un nivel tan elevado de estupidez y soberbia, que es capaz de herir su propio mundo, romper su propia casa y destruir el ecosistema que le permite vivir. Como diseñadores tenemos la capacidad y el poder de alertar con contundencia visual sobre el cambio climático, denunciar sus causas y prevenir sus consecuencias.

Unfortunately the irreversible future consequences of climate change are not taken seriously when there is no direct impact on our daily lives.
Every action that contributes to raise awareness of what is happening will produce a collective effect so that we, as an informed society, demand joint actions from industry and authorities.
Desafortunadamente las consecuencias futuras e irreversibles del cambio climático no son tomadas en serio cuando no hay un impacto directo en nuestra vida diaria.
Cada acción que ayude a crear conciencia de lo que está sucediendo producirá un efecto colectivo para que, como sociedad informada exijamos a la industria y autoridades acciones conjuntas.

Climate change is causing changes throughout the life of the planet, we are losing animal and plant species, interfering in their ecosystems. The phenomena that are causing the death of people, animals and plants around the planet are often directly caused by climate change.
We have to think about the planet that we are going to leave for future generations. Thinking and reflecting to act on climate change is essential for the maintenance of the life we know on Earth.
El cambio climático está provocando cambios en toda la vida del planeta, estamos perdiendo especies animales y vegetales, interfiriendo en sus ecosistemas. Los fenómenos que están provocando la muerte de personas, animales y plantas alrededor de todo el planeta son muchas veces causados directamente por el cambio climático.
Hay que pensar en el planeta que vamos a dejar como herencia para las futuras generaciones. Pensar y reflexionar para actuar sobre el cambio climático es esencial para mantener la vida que conocemos en la Tierra.

I’m not an ecologist, neither an eco-activist but I really do care about climate change.Why care? Because we’ve been thinking till now, artlessly, that the beautiful planet we inherited would be forever the same and it’s just since a few decades that we started seeing that man can really destroy the planet only by lack of care and love. Each action is important and has to be careful and mindful to the planet.
In everyday life I try to be aware of the world I’m living in, be consious of the effects of overusing our planet and be delicate and the most transparent possible when “existing”.I have a piece of wooden land in Canada where I spend time as soon and as much I can. Instead of building a house and consuming the space and resources, I leave it as is and I just go there to contemplate and resource myself directly with primordial nature: an horizontal log becomes a sofa, big rocks become seatings, a hammock is an intermittent bed and a place to contemplate nature. The ceiling is as high as the sky and the perimetral walls are signed with a fluorescent ribbon on the tree branches. Moss, ferns, mushrooms, coloured leaves and snow are my seasonal carpets. Deer, marmots and birds share my space. Nothing better than resourcing inside nature and spend the rest of my time trying to preserve it.
Why should we loose all that magnificence?
No soy una ecologista, ni una eco-activista, pero realmente me importa el cambio climático. ¿Por qué? Porque hemos estado pensando hasta ahora, sin artificios, que el hermoso planeta que heredamos será siempre el mismo y es solo desde unas décadas que comenzamos a ver que el hombre realmente puede destruir el planeta solo por falta de cuidado y amor. Cada acción es importante y debe ser cuidadosa y consciente del planeta. En la vida cotidiana trato de ser consciente del mundo en el que vivo, ser consciente de los efectos del uso excesivo de nuestro planeta y ser delicada y lo más transparente posible cuando “existo”.
Tengo un pedazo de tierra en Canadá donde paso el tiempo tan pronto como puedo. En lugar de construir una casa y consumir el espacio y los recursos, la he dejado tal como es y me dirijo allí para contemplar y recurrir directamente a lo primordial de la naturaleza: un tronco horizontal se convierte en un sofá, las grandes rocas se convierten en asientos, una hamaca es una cama intermitente y un lugar para contemplar la naturaleza. El techo es tan alto como el cielo y las paredes perimetrales están firmadas con una cinta fluorescente en las ramas de los árboles. Musgo, helechos, setas, hojas de colores y nieve son mis alfombras estacionales. Ciervos, marmotas y pájaros comparten mi espacio. Nada mejor que recurrir a recursos naturales y pasar el resto de mi tiempo tratando de preservarlo.
¿Por qué perder toda esa magnificencia?

Cause we are a change factor everyday, in many positives and negatives ways, and there’s a huge responsability to find the balance in our actions, as individuals and also as collective we need to give answers, because we live in the same space and belongs to us with all the benefits and the problems, and find solutions that hit positively in any action we can. Facing any problem of our age that were silently created throughout generations, taking circumstances that globally affects us, and even today, I’m also a family head and I also want to give education about respecting their social, cultural, ideological and biological environment to my kids and the people around me.
Porque nosotros como humanidad somos el factor de cambio, tanto positivo como negativo, y es una responsabilidad buscar un balance en ésta acciones, pues además como individuos también debemos responder por lo colectivo, porque habitamos el mismo espacio y éste mismo nos pertenece con todo y problemas, y hallar soluciones que tengan algún impacto positivo son el principio de cualquier acción con propósito de cambio. Los problemas que se confrontan en ésta época en la que por generaciones hemos acumulado una serie de circunstancias que globalmente nos están afectando, y hoy, que soy padre de familia y tengo la necesidad de educar a mis hijos respetando su entorno social, cultural, ideológico y biológico.

Human solidarity is the key to triggering a common will to act on climate change”, “the notion of human solidarity is misunderstood” some say that this is a moral approach that sounds good but is of no help for Political leaders leading negotiations and seeking complex legal agreements. It is time to act, evolve towards sustainable agricultural practices,Protecting people and our natural habitat and solidarity can unleash the collective power of billions of people.
El cambio climático se está convirtiendo en un problema importante para los países y las poblaciones del planeta. La creciente emisión de gases de efecto invernadero por la humanidad tiene el efecto de aumentar la temperatura promedio de la atmósfera y la superficie del planeta, con impactos desastrosos en el clima y el medio ambiente.

Because I do not want to live in a world where our daily actions as society —such as transport, food and livelihood— cause impacts in our environment through the pollution due to gases or wastes which result in bigger problems such as the climate change and its more clear effects: increase of extreme weather events, droughts and floods that are disturbing our quality of life and threatening our survival and that of the other species with whom we share the planet Earth.
Porque no quiero vivir en un mundo en donde las acciones cotidianas de las personas —como transporte, alimento y vivienda— afecten nuestro medio ambiente a través de la contaminación presente en gases o residuos causantes de problemas más grandes como el cambio climático y sus efectos más claros: incremento de fenómenos meteorológicos extremos, sequías o inundaciones, los cuales afectan nuestra calidad de vida y amenazan nuestra supervivencia y la de los demás seres vivos con los que compartimos el planeta Tierra.

Within the span of our present generation, we are seeing rapid progress in almost every field. However, human activity with fossil fuels and destruction of forests are causing global warming. This change in climate reflects an imbalance in nature with disastrous results—like coral reefs dying, drought, crop failure, heatwaves, unpredictable rainfall, cyclonic storms and disease outbreaks—in every corner of the globe.
We must recognise that nature doesn’t need us, as much as we need her to survive and thrive. In fact, I go so far to say that we are the Earth because what happens to this planet directly happens to us. Therefore, caring about climate change is just like caring for our own well-being. It would be very irresponsible of us, and unfortunate for us, if we hurtle towards an uninhabitable Earth within our lifetime itself.
En el lapso de nuestra generación actual, estamos viendo un progreso rápido en casi todos los campos. Sin embargo, la actividad humana con los combustibles fósiles y la destrucción de los bosques están causando el calentamiento global. Este cambio en el clima refleja un desequilibrio en la naturaleza con resultados desastrosos —como muerte delos arrecifes de coral, sequía, pérdida de cosechas, olas de calor, precipitaciones impredecibles, tormentas ciclónicas y los brotes de enfermedades— en todos los rincones del planeta.
Debemos reconocer que la naturaleza no nos necesita tanto como nosotros necesitamos ella sobreviva y prospere. De hecho, voy tan lejos como para decir que somos la Tierra porque lo que le sucede a este planeta nos sucede directamente. Por lo tanto, preocuparse por el cambio climático es cuidar nuestro propio bienestar. Sería muy irresponsable y desafortunado para nosotros, si nos precipitamos hacia una Tierra inhabitable

Unfortunately, for many people the concept of climate change has become an ideological issue, where they feel entitled to deny its existence and question its impact on our ecosystems despite the overwhelming scientific evidence to support this. Denying climate change makes it impossible to address the problem. Only by acknowledging it will we be able to find actions we can take as a society to deal with this vital issue.
Desafortunadamente, para muchas personas el concepto de cambio climático se ha convertido en un problema ideológico, en el que se sienten autorizados a negar su existencia y cuestionar su impacto en nuestros ecosistemas, a pesar de la abrumadora evidencia científica que lo respalda. Negar el cambio climático hace que sea imposible abordar el problema. Solo reconociéndolo podremos encontrar acciones que podamos tomar como sociedad para enfrentar este vital problema.

I´m old enough to compare how the planet has been behaved during my childhood and how everything has changed dramatically in recent years. Droughts, floods, climate change, animals in danger extinction, decreased of green areas by the expansion of cities, excessive waste of water, and the serious problem of trash that we generate day by day. The younger generations will have serious problems to face if we do not change our way of life inmediatly. It is necessary to implement actions that conscious and encourage young designers to get involved in the topic and propose design projects that take care of the environment throughout all the process, since conception to end of useful life.
Tengo la suficiente edad para comparar cómo se comportaba el planeta en mi niñez y cómo todo ha cambiado de forma drástica en los últimos años. Sequías, inundaciones, cambio del clima, animales en peligro de extinción, disminución de zonas verdes por la expansión de construcciones, uso desmedido de agua, y el grave problema de residuos que generamos día a día. Las generaciones más jóvenes tendrán serios problemas que enfrentar si no cambiamos desde ya nuestra forma de vida. Se requiere implementar acciones que concienticen e incentiven a los jóvenes diseñadores a involucrarse en el tema y proponer proyectos de diseño que cuiden el medio ambiente durante todo el proceso desde su concepción hasta de vida útil.

Climate Change is not a new topic. Our governments have plans to resolve it for years, but few actions have been done. Most of people gradually lost their interest on this topic. As designers, we have the abilities and responsibilities to arouse people’s interest again. I hope this competition can inspire other designers. “Design can save the world!”
El cambio climático no es un tema nuevo. Durante años, los gobiernos han creado planes para resolverlo pero pocas acciones se han llevado a cabo. Lamentablemente la mayoría de las personas han perdido gradualmente su interés en este tema. Los diseñadores tenemos la habilidad y la responsabilidad de despertar nuevamente el interés. Espero que esta competencia pueda inspirar a otros diseñadores. “¡El diseño puede salvar el mundo!”
